So many books have been written about life in Africa. Real life adventures of legendary figures like Fredrick Courtney Selous or the exploits of the great ivory hunters make for stimulating reading. Such nostalgia from by-gone days seems almost fictional.

Remarkably, the wildness of Africa in many places remains untamed. Areas remain where neither electricity nor piped water flow. Oh sure, even the remote Masaai herdsman, in his half-wrapped shuka, can be seen talking on a cell phone. But this is nearly the only thing that would set him apart from his great-grandfather.

Our personal journey as residents in this land of yesteryear is nearly to its end. This chapter in our missionary journey is closing. Tears are restrained with effort as I write this piece. I have repeatedly said that no one can visit Africa and not be touched. But words cannot convey how intensified the effects are from livingin Africa. About six years ago, veteran missionary Ed Crookshank told me “Africa gets in your blood.” Well, medications have been able to rid my blood of malaria parasites, but Africa remains there.

To each supporting brother and sister and to each giving congregation we offer our sincerest thanks. You have been faithfully holding up our hands as we have labored these past five years. The final pages of this “chapter” have been a distinct blessing. We have enjoyed the unique opportunity of living here in Iringa and working indigenously. We have labored shoulder to shoulder with our brethren, striving to implement only what they can continue doing unaided by outsiders.

The dynamite is still in the Word of God (Romans 1:16). It retains its force to cut the human heart (Acts 2:37; 7:54). The sword of the Spirit is effective when wielded with patience. We are humbled to have been the “earthen vessels” to carry this saving water of life to those athirst (2 Corinthians 4:7). Paul rhetorically asked the question: “how shall they preach, except they be sent?” (Romans 10:15). Thank you for allowing us to be the sent ones.

We are requesting that you continue your support through June if possible. We are prayerful that this will be sufficient to allow us to relocate and become reestablished. We presently have two congregations to investigate in person upon our return. We are prayerful that one of these is the “door” God knows is best for us.

Even though we are planning on settling into a new work in America, I still wish to assist foreign works. I already have a trip scheduled for New Zealand next year. I would be interested in hearing from you if you are willing to be a supporter for short mission efforts in the future.

Please pray for our family as we begin a new chapter in our service to the Lord.

George

Sunday was a bit unusual, even for us. The previous night’s rain had swollen the river and made travel on the dirt roads slippery. For our Sunday service, Carey led singing and I delivered the sermon. Shadrack, one of our new converts, led the observance of the Lord’s death.

Sunday morning we learned of the death of David’s brother. After worship, our family went to the market and bought 20kg of rice to donate for the funeral meal, as well as bought 10kg of beans that the church agreed to donate. We also bought some bananas, Snickers and water, which would serve as our lunch. Three loaded vehicles drove about half an hour to the rural village. Joyce, a woman with whom I have been having Bible studies volunteered to drive her car. Try to imagine going back in time about 2,000 years and you will have in your mind’s eye that which our eyes beheld. Mud walled houses with grass-thatched roofs, hand-tilled fields of corn, and footpaths right out of the parable of the sower.

The whole village had converged upon the little house wherein was the corpse. Just outside was the plain wooden casket, waiting to receive the body. We sat outside listening to the wailing of the women seated inside, near the body. Wood smoke filled the air as ladies busied themselves preparing food in large pots. Soon after hearing the pounding of the nails, four men appeared carrying the coffin. The whole multitude followed to the middle of the cornfield for a graveside service. Try as we might, it was impossible for us to be inconspicuous. As the only “wazungu” present, every move we made was watched. Our hope is that our presence, along with the other Christians who attended, will provide a later opportunity for David, whose family lives in the village, to tell others about the church.

While standing at the edge of the crowd we received word that the young man Charles had been studying with was ready for baptism. Out of respect for the family, we waited long enough for the grave to be filled and the final words were spoken. As soon as the crowd began to disperse, we headed off to meet Charles and Garosi John, who had caught a ride in a dala dala to get to the river. They were waiting for us on the side of the road, and together we made the short trek to the river’s edge. It was wonderful to see Lusasi (who was recently restored) baptize Garosi into Christ. What a day – worship, two burials, and one resurrection to newness of life!

But wait, there’s more! Monday morning Charles and I had another class with Joyce. Previous classes indicated to me she had a tenderness and eagerness for truth. She came to a clearer understanding of the one true church and was ready to enter that Body. Monday afternoon we headed to the familiar riverside, which was now overflowing its banks. Charles baptized Joyce in the churning muddy waters of the Little Ruaha River. Praise God for another sister in Christ! We thank God for another burial and resurrection!

Please keep in your prayers the classes that are still ongoing in Iringa and Tanangozi. We thank you for your support and prayers.

I recall when my siblings and I were growing up there would be some legs aches. We played hard and slept hard. We experienced what might be called growing pains.

We have been laboring in Iringa for one year. On our very first visit I remember counting 10 adults and 10 children – an attendance of 20. Last Sunday we had 48 in worship and that has been about the usual for a while now. We have been planting the seed and watering and “God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6). We have been so thankful for God’s blessings.

One thing that has thrilled us is the opportunity we have had to teach and labor following the New Testament example. During his journeys, when Paul arrived at a town, he did not come with trumpets and pomp. Rather, this apostle to the Gentiles had a teaching focus. “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2). Upon arrival at Philippi, Paul, the beloved physician Luke and their companions made their way to the riverside where they “supposed there was a place of prayer” (Acts 16:13). Among the ladies gathered was one Lydia, whose heart God opened, by means of the preached word (Acts 16:14, 13) and “she was baptized, and her household” (Acts 16:15).

We also have been blessed to meet, teach, and baptize precious ladies – Prisca, Olivia, mama Salome. Men also have given heed to the teaching of Christ –Shadrack, Deo and Christopher. Many others have been taught thoroughly but have as yet not obeyed the gospel – their number would be too many to list. We believe the key to true conversion is adequate teaching which brings people “to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4) – the very thing God desires. Jesus made it clear that a prospective disciple must “first sit down and count the cost” (Luke 14:28).

Back during the very first meeting of the men, we missionaries were asked what we came to bring. They assumed we would follow the pattern others had set. What was obvious was their interest in material amenities. Would we be building this or that, maybe a primary school, or maybe putting some members on support? Initially they were disappointed to learn that we came to work “with them” rather than to bring many things “for them.” We made it clear that we came with a ministry of the word.

What a thrill it has been to see members doing for themselves. Before we ever arrived in Iringa, brother Isaac was supporting his family by building furniture. When the congregation began to outgrow the little wooden benches, the men allotted an amount of money from the local treasury for him to build more benches (with backs even – very nice). When the songbooks became tattered and few, new ones were purchased by the congregation. Oh, sure, we could have sent one e-mail to the States and had brethren send enough money to buy 100 song booklets in one fell swoop. But do I even need to mention the difference in the attitude of people when something is a handout, versus something they have invested in? When our African brethren are given the dignity to build as they grow we are building for the future.

Before our arrival David was preaching for the congregation to the best of his ability. We did not come in as missionaries and take over the pulpit. Yes Carey, Charles, Jacob, and I preach occasionally when we are asked. But David remains the preacher. When he had need of better transportation guess what happened? It was not the idea or even a hint from the missionaries, but the men chose to allot an amount from the treasury for David to buy a bicycle.

These may seem like insignificant steps but they are vital for a local congregation to grow toward maturity. Recently the men had some difficulties understanding God’s plan for church leadership. It was particularly hard for some to think beyond the denominational concept that the preacher is like a pastor. Bible lessons helped establish the truth that every Christian man should mature to the point of meeting the qualifications for an elder, but for a few exceptions (i.e. all men are not required to be married or have children). It will surely be a long time before the congregation has men qualified, but they must have the goal.

I thank God for allowing me to live to see this type of congregational development. My prayer is that little by little both supporters and missionaries will see the long-term merit of following this type of non-hype, congregational-empowering evangelism. George Jensen

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we begin the year 2012, we must take time for reflection.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we begin the year 2012, we must take time for reflection. Our labors have been blessed with many new converts and signs of healthy congregational development. We are mindful of each of you who have faithfully held us up in prayer, as well as supported us through financial means. Your contributions in 2011 have not been in vain. We thank you for all you have given.

As we look enter this new year, we humbly ask that you please keep us in your budget. We still have work to do here in Iringa in the coming year, so we still need your prayers and support.

2012 will also be a time of transition for our family. For a time, signs seemed favorable for us to work with a fledgling congregation in New Zealand. However, as we learned more about immigration regulations, it now seems unlikely that we all would qualify for entrance visas as we had hoped.

We are presently open to new possibilities. We are in an “investigation mode” and would welcome your suggestions. We know God works providentially, but His ways are “past tracing out!” (Romans 11:33). Mordecai of old said of Esther: “who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14). Paul said: “the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the progress of the gospel” (Philippians 1:12). Even today, we don’t know what opportunities God might set before us to serve in His kingdom.

Should you wish to communicate with us, please send an email to gjjensen6@yahoo.com.

In Christian love,

George & Joy

Reaching the maturity to appoint elders is a hurdle facing so many African congregations. The very reason Paul left Titus in Crete was for this evangelist to facilitate growth toward eldership appointment (Titus 1:5). In a recent meeting of the men, it became obvious that much teaching was needed on the subject of congregational leadership.

Many congregations “tread water” for years, never moving closer to God’s divine ideal for congregational organization. In my experience, two factors particularly trap a church into leadership stagnation. Often, one man has the “upper hand” in men’s meetings. Some are of the Diotrephes variety (2 John 9, 10), while others may simply “take charge” in the absence of any others showing initiative. These men often seem reluctant to influence toward eldership appointment. Some want to keep their leadership and others simply see none qualified for the office of a bishop. So the subject receives no attention at all.

A second contributing factor is the breakdown of the family. The erosion of the domestic structure is at the heart of many congregational woes. One elder recently wrote to me deploring the shocking number of divorces within the local body of believers. The number of men with strong, stable marriages seems to be shrinking and children of the saints are leaving the church in disturbing numbers. The men who have proved their ability to lead their own families (1 Timothy 3:5) are becoming an endangered tribe. So the pool of men to be considered for the high church office is small.

In response to the need, Carey and I spoke for our leadership seminar in Iringa. Following Sunday morning worship, the men joined for a lunch in one member’s home. We enjoyed rice, beans, goat meat, bananas and sodas. With satisfied stomachs we returned to the building. I delivered a lesson on congregational leadership in the absence of elders. Carey followed by speaking about the need to strive toward an eldership and the qualifications that each man must be working to attain. After all, but for a few exceptions (i.e. married, believing children), all Christian men should meet the qualifications of an elder.

As a follow-up to our Leadership Seminar, I delivered a lesson the next Sunday, challenging us to develop goals for spiritual growth, both as individuals and congregationally. That is a challenge for all of us, not only the church in Tanzania. We need to plan for growth if we expect it to become a reality.

What are your goals for spiritual growth in 2012?

George

Our Lord gave us a monumental charge – to go into all the world with the saving gospel. He died that men might live. This commission in His own words reads: “Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit:” (Matthew 28:19). The “second part” of this charge is: “teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:20).

Once a soul has been freed from the bondage of sin, continued teaching is vital to further strengthen this initial foundation of faith. The attrition rate among new converts is often traceable to inadequate initial teaching and the lack of “counting the cost.” But also, the lack of follow-up teaching plays a part.

We are blessed with a good group of new converts here in Iringa. On the 7th of this month we hosted a Friday evening teaching and fellowship time. We had a great turnout. Joy had prepared a number of traditional African dishes and the Samfords also contributed more. The included picture shows the wall ledge which served as a buffet “table.”

Following our nice meal we all gathered in our living room and I delivered a lesson – The Problem of Human Suffering. It is amazing how far back in time misconceptions about this subject can be traced. Even in the time of Job (Job was likely a Patriarch; Job might be the oldest Book in our Bibles) his “friends” made the assumption that since he was suffering he must have some personal sin. Furthermore, they surmised that since he was suffering greatly, then his sin must be grievous.

Superstition, witch-doctors, and such like are still so deeply rooted in this culture. It is so important that our new brothers and sisters be taught the truth regarding these issues. I have been amazed at how many Christians here seem to still be in mental bondage to some of these deep seeded fears. Many believe Jesus can save, but still are concerned that a witch-doctor might put a curse upon them. Freedom from such fears is just one among many blessings that those in Christ should enjoy!

We keep on teaching. Please keep on praying for us.

In America people are accustomed to having many choices. Who has not zipped into the drive through and stared at the reader board, or pushed a cart down long aisles at the mega-market passing hundreds of different items? When it comes to religion – there are choices galore. There is every imaginable denomination; many of which are splintered into various sub categories. No wonder the masses of humanity are in such a religious quandary!

Here in Africa, choices are limited, but not in the realm of religion. Mainstream denominations have long yielded their missionary influence in this land. What may surprise you is the fact that even some of the smaller religious bodies have a presence here. For example about a year or so ago, I had a study with a man who was a preacher for the Mennonite church. He had been trained in one of their schools of preaching here in Tanzania.

Another curious fact is that most religious bodies here have what might be termed a “Pentecostal Flavor.” That is to say, they have a leaning toward being charismatic. Last week, there was a special meeting being held on the grounds belonging to the Catholic Church. As I drove by, I saw hundreds of people assembled. It is hard to estimate accurately, but my guess was near 1,000 people. The amplifier system was loudly broadcasting the preaching that was in progress. It sounded just like what you might expect to hear at a Pentecostal/holiness revival. My brother Charles said the Catholics must use this type of presentation to compete with the other denominations. Such “hooping and hollering” draws the crowds!

In contrast, the Lord’s church has been around for about two thousand years. What worked in the first century will work still today. The power is still in the gospel (Romans 1:16). God still promises that the seekers will find (Matthew 7:7). We need not mimic the denominations. Those who are drawn by such theatrics are easily drawn to the next show in town. People seem to freely change churches as easily as they change their sandals. The true church does not need to try to be different – it is different! Neither should she try to be like false bodies. Remember Israel of old, who wished to be like the nations about her?!

Like Paul we must be busy teaching publically and from house to house (Acts 20:20). Three key qualities of “overcomers” are listed in Revelation 12:11. First, they have been washed (Acts 22:16), and continue to be washed (1 John 1:7) in the blood of the Lamb. Second, they have the courage and practice to share the message from their own lips. We will never see the church grow as God desires until each saint gives “the word of their testimony.” Third, their commitment ran so deep that they “loved not their life even unto death.” Faithful life in Christ is of more value than physical life (Cf. Matthew 10:28). We expect a missionary and a preacher to “share the gospel” from their own lips. God also expects the same from each of his children. George Jensen

I have been receiving many requests from dear brethren for one of my sermon outlines on Modest Apparel. Every preacher ought to be concerned about preaching the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). Apparently there is some lack of clear, Scripture-filled lessons on this subject. I am therefore providing a sermon outline. Please use it as a study tool. Those who have been asking seem to be of high caliber; saints who are serious and thirsty for godliness. It is my prayer that the verses herein provided be pondered deeply and appropriate application be made. The lewdness of the world has deeply influenced God’s people. Joy and I are concerned about how shockingly unclad some Christians are dressing these days. I have even heard of some men refusing to serve the Lord’s supper because such would expose them to standing over others who are sitting exposed. May we all set an example of Christian purity.

Information is powerful! How often have we in hindsight realized that we had made an uninformed choice or decision? In this third installment we challenge those who are in the position of deciding what mission work to support to “do some homework.” Elders, church leaders, preachers, deacons, please be willing to invest some time before investing money! If you are really mission-minded, vow to educate yourself before hastily committing funds to a work.

Many church leaders seem to make a common mistake. Namely, assuming that a man with good business savvy will make good mission decisions for the congregation (I have seen the same mistake made in the selection of a treasurer). An example would be appointing a corporate-world wise man to be a deacon of missions. Judgments will likely be made without any real knowledge of missions or missionary challenges. The whole “bottom line” and “budgets” and “numbers” mentality will likely be transferred right over from the secular arena into the spiritual kingdom. A brief survey of God’s dealings with his people in the past ought to give us a clue that Jehovah is able to bless His people with great victories, even when such seems unlikely from the human vantage point. Elders must educate themselves to be able to get beyond basic questions i.e. how much money is this missionary saying he needs? How many baptisms are being reported?

Think about the difference between childlike questions and adult questions. The type of questions asked reveals a person’s level of knowledge. The foregoing questions are rudimentary. Consider an example of a more penetrating question. Is the mission work under consideration following a paternal or an indigenous approach? While these two methodologies can have some overlapping, they are quite distinct in practice and long-term outcome. I would highly recommend as mandatory “homework” for every elder, deacon, etc. the fine booklet by Rod Rutherford titled: “Practical Principles of World Evangelism” (available at www.rodrutherfordbooks.com). This web site states: “It is excellent for elders who really want to know how to work effectively with missionaries.” Brother Rutherford, now in his seventies, has vast, in-the-field experience in many foreign fields including Africa and Australia. If you obtain this fine material be sure to read carefully pages 85 to 109 if you wish to understand why the question posed above is so important. As knowledge increases, effectiveness in fulfilling the great commission will increase.

With heaviness of heart I must say that most of our American-funded efforts are following a paternalistic method. Such can be characterized by (seemingly) “amazing and exciting growth” in its infancy. But a genuine analysis will reveal a condition more often than not, of what the Hebrew writer described (5:12-14). The synthetic “propping up” with dollars, which often flies under the banner of “helping the needy”, needs to be exposed. The greatest missionary seemed to learn the difference between helping and enabling (cf. 2 Corinthians 12:13). While this point might be puzzling upon first reading, I pray that with study of methodology it will become clear.

While we are giving attention to education I wish to offer a word of caution. I am pleading with you, dear reader, to be humble enough to resist a specific temptation. Namely, not to allow one or a few brief mission visits to swell your head. A brother makes a two-week visit to the country of ___________________, and returns with a comprehensive understanding about missions. The crash course has worked a miracle. He has become the Guru of missiology. In reality, I would venture to say that every missionary who has lived in a foreign field will tell you it was far different than the view he had from a brief visit. Am I in opposition to supporters visiting the work in person? On the contrary!!!! I am a vocal advocate encouraging supporters to visit the work and see for themselves. You can be encouraged and also encourage those you visit. I must add this side note. Often, if there are shenanigans taking place on the field, every façade deemed necessary by the charlatans, will be erected in time for the visitor’s arrival. You will be shown what they want you to see! Remember, being informed before your visit will better equip you to assess the work you are shown. George, 2011

When elderships, congregations, and individuals ask about mission efforts it is a good sign. We each reveal our interests by the inquiries we make. For example, who has not heard a question about the most recent standing of a sports team? Sports fans are usually easy to detect. So also Christians ought to be known by their enthusiasm concerning work about the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20). In a previous article we addressed one primary consideration when assessing the worthiness of a mission worker or work. Namely, it must be biblical throughout! Not only must the missionary teach the truth, but also the way the work is carried out must conform to New Testament authority.

We now turn our attention to an “evaluation tool” which is sorely misunderstood and frequently abused. This tool or test may be termed the “numbers test.” It takes various forms and is spoken of in a variety of ways, but one basic attitude prevails. “How many baptisms do they have each year?” “How many congregations are being established?” In reality, if you ask faithful veteran missionaries, they will readily admit that this mindset often comes out in “mission reports” more as a numbers game, rather than a true test. I heard from the lips of one church leader the statement: “We choose a work where we can get the best bang for our buck!” There was no mistake about it – the only determining factor to him was – number of reported baptisms.

What about the fantastic “results” that we are reading and hearing about? One writer simply took the figures another man reported, and the length of the short mission trip, and calculated that it would have require having one baptism about every 20 minutes, if the brother slept at all. Some are reporting thousands of baptisms that simply stagger the mind. And yet, I heard from one native Indian preacher, that he had worked in India, as an Indian, for about a year and a half in one place, without anything remotely like what he read in some US reports. My own short two visits to India sadly revealed some disturbing activities. I am presently living and working in Africa, and can tell you the problem is not unique to India.

Consider momentarily the examples of Noah and Jonah. Noah was “a preacher of righteousness” who faithfully proclaimed for Jehovah, and God “preserved Noah with seven others” (2 Peter 2:5). In contrast, Jonah enjoyed overwhelming response (Matthew 12:41). Is it possible today, were Noah traveling the country seeking financial support, that he would be turned away empty-handed, because his work was “just not showing the numbers.” What about the ministry of the Son of Man? His primary focus while upon earth was to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. En masse He was rejected!

Please listen. We are not suggesting that numbers cannot be considered. I am not unaware of the principle forbidding casting “pearls before the swine”(Matthew 7:6). However, I know the “pressure to produce” has been a mighty temptation behind many skewed numbers and many an inflated presentation. The problem goes deeper than most know, and it troubles me more than I can herein describe. Furthermore, a desire to retain support from number-minded supporters has also led to a laxity in the second part of the great commission. After making disciples, we are commanded to also give attention to teaching these new converts to observe all that Christ commanded (Matthew 28:19, 20). How sad when a missionary can be in a place for many years, and report “great success” (numbers of baptisms), only to have the work collapse after his departure.

God desires “all men to be saved, and come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). It would be another discussion to address what it takes to bring someone “to a knowledge of the truth.” But I have no doubt it cannot be done by hastily uttering five steps conjoined with five verses and then urging one to the water. Many of the reported “baptisms” are not conversions at all.

The word of God is likened unto seed (Luke 8:11). When the farmer plants the seed, it takes time to grow. Personal evangelism requires patient teaching. I recall years ago when the Crossroads/Boston movement was in its heyday. One brother fell into their trap, thinking they had found a way to make converts quickly. I had no doubt about his motive. However, there are no shortcuts to reaping a healthy harvest. George 2011
